Now usable with Netscape!

I’ve tweaked the template a bit (removing Blog.Hotornot’s dodgy javascript thingy) to make the page render properly in Netscape 4. It doesn’t look pretty, but it should be usable. It’s not going to look pretty either; Netscape 4′s implementation of CSS (which the Moveable Type templates make heavy use of) is too broken for that. And I’m not going to strip out all the <div> tags to replace them with <font>. Netscape 4 is really history now; it’s not worth my while making this site look perfect in what’s now an obsolete piece of software!

I haven’t had the chance to test this using Mozilla or Opera – any Mozilla or Opera (Or Netscape 6 for that matter) users out there like to comment on how this blog looks?

We want your comments!

Hardly anyone but Scott even seems to post comments!

A few days ago, I posted my favourite guitar solos.. I’m a bit disappointed that no-one (except Scott) has commented on them. Does everyone agree with my top six?

If you feel you have something to say about something on this blog, then say it!

Bye-Bye Manchester

Yes, after two years I’m leaving Manchester and returning south. I moved north for what was initially a three month contract for SX3, which got extended and eventually lasted more than 18 months. Sadly the downturn in the IT market in the past year had meant contract work in the north-west has just about dried up, so I’m going to try my luck elsewhere.

I handed in the notice for my flat in Sale this morning, and for the next few months I’m going to be staying with my parents in sunny Slough.

What’s wrong with liberatianism?

I’ve included Mark Rosenfelder’s Zompist.com on my blogroll from the beginning, even though his site isn’t really a blog as such. I find him mostly well-written and thought provoking, and his politics balances all those ranting right-wingers on my blogroll.

He’s written a long essay on what’s wrong with libertarianism. You may or may not agree with what he says – I know there are a lot of libertarians on my blogroll, and some of them may even read this blog. Most of his points are well-argued and thought out, but he closes with the following comments:

Libertarianism is essentially the morality of a thug. It’s a worship of the already successful, privileging money and property above everything else– love, humanity, justice. And let’s not forget that lurid fascination with firepower.

It’s also the philosophy of a snotty teen, someone who’s read too much Heinlein, absorbed the sordid notion that an intellectual elite should rule the subhuman masses, and convinced himself that reading a few bad novels qualifies him as a member of the elite.

Is he attacking a straw man here? It seems to me he’s attacking the most extreme elements of liberatianism, such as the ranting wingnuts you meet on usenet, and using it to discredit the whole philosophy, in the same way that some conservatives use the worst excesses of Stalinism to discredit social democrats. Or is there a grain of truth in what he says?

Googlefight!

Make a fight with Googlefight!

Results so far:

John Major beats Edwina Currie
And so does Ann Widdecombe. Not sure what this proves

The Welsh beat Anne Robinson. She won’t call them ‘Ugly Trolls’ again!

What about music? It appears that Dio beats Ozzy

Trains? Virgin Voyagers beat Class 47/8s. I think Richard Branson has been bribing Google

RPGs? D&D sadly beats GURPS. But GURPS still manages to beat Deadlands

Blog Meetup, London

Anyone going to the International Blog MEETUP in London? There are blog meetups in many cities around the world; the London one is at 12 Bar Club, 22-23 Denmark Place, London, on Wednesday, September 18 @ 7:00PM . I plan on being there!

Hope the attendance is a little better than the Manchester meetup last month, attended by all of three people.

More blogs!

I’ve added a couple more blogs to the blogroll on the left; firstly Anne’s Odd and Assorted Thoughts, the blog of Anne Blaeske, also known as “Kit” on Dreamlyrics. Anne’s blog initially inspired me to create my own blog. The return of this blog to active service means I can blogroll it at last. It also counterbalances all those right-wing blogs I’ve linked to.

Secondly, The Pagan Prattle Online, a site that sends up both new-age and fundamentalist silliness, always an entertaining read.
