In Britain we’ve reached the point where minority voters outnumber racist voters, so out-and-out racism is a vote loser even for the Conservatives. The hardcore racists have fled to far-right fringe parties.

The death penalty for disobedient children is a little fringe even for the Bible Belt, but while few Republican will actually admit to believing that slavery was a good thing, there is a deep strain of thought in American conservatism that African-Americans were better off as slaves and still better off now for having been slaves, so why can’t they just be grateful and stop complaining? Most have learned more palatable circumlocutions to express this sentiment than Hubbard.
