You can still have attributes in the 16-18 range if you roll randomly. Also that 15 if you don't roll randomly is before you add in racial bonuses.

The other way get higher attributes is attribute rises when you level up. You get this at 4th, 8th, 12th and 16th levels for most classes, but fighters get extra ones.

Ok, if you don't need the 18 in a primary characteristic (STR/INT/WIS) and 16s in CON and DEX then the new lower numbers might work. However, if PCs don't have stats in the 16-18 range why do they exist? If having them helps and only one player rolls well then are you going to end up with an unbalanced party?

If I ever GM in the D&D system again then I will use whatever monsters I want, including Mind Flayers and/or Beholders. Mind you, any player should realise that in my worlds you can't assume the monster you see is going to have the stats for its description in the rule book of any generation of D&D. This is especially true of all oozes, slimes, jellies and moulds - which always get their colours and special effects rolled randomly when first encountered in any dungeon area (but once defined are consistent within that area).

They've changed the bonus progression; you don't need half your stats in the 16-18 range to be effective. A CON of 14 still gives a +2 bonus.

Also first level hit points aren't rolled, you take the maximum (the house rule we used back in 1E days). And the level progression table means characters progress rapidly at low levels - you should make 2nd after just one session.

Rogues have been beefed-up a little; now get d8s for hit dice, same as the Cleric. Mages (Wizards and Sorcerors) get d6s.

Well I doubt I shall ever play 5th edition D&D, but it seems to me that the character stats systems proposed are flawed.

The characters are the heroes of their world. Their stats are not going to be in the normal 9 to 12 range of a 3 to 18 spread. If they are warriors they will be mighty ones, if magic users they will be Nobel prize winners, but might well have problems picking up anything heavier than a quill pen.

They need to survive a hostile world. CON has to be 16 or you don't make it to second level.

Oh, have the done anything to make the Rogue worth playing? Fights and finds traps worse than cleric, opens locks worse than MU, splits the party by sneaking off (never a good idea as someone gets bored), and a general pain to GM for.

As a note alignments have changed a bit in their write ups. Lawful Evil for example offers a more self centered approach, yet Lawful Good can work alongside for a goal.
