Returning the subject to Boris, Nick Cohen failed to mention the Boris Bus. Even that is a heap of overpriced and under-performing junk. Expect they’ll end up on the scrapheap sooner rather than later, replaced by boring but sensible off-the-shelf vehicles.

It says something about his notoriety that I have actually heard of Joh Bjelke-Petersen.

Back in the day, there was a corrupt premier of the Australian state of Queensland, Joh Bjelke-Petersen, who pulled the same tricks. He acted in front of the cameras as though he was a bit of a loveable duffer. His inability to articulate answers to journalists’ questions was legendary: acting as though he was just an ordinary down-to-earth bloke caught in the headlights of the media. He was actually a very shrewd operator, and ruled Queensland using a deliberately broken undemocratic electoral system and a corrupt police force answering directly to him, from the late sixties until the late eighties.

Yes. And the list of things about Boris Johnson that are phoney includes “being a buffoon”. It’s all an act. He’s actually a very shrewd and calculating politician, who acts the fool to appear safely loveable. Which makes him very dangerous.
