Agreed on Dire Straits. Love Over Gold and Brothers in Arms are both great albums, though I usually skip “Money for Nothing” and “Walk of Life”… I’ve heard them more than enough.

Come to think of it, just about every sacred cow artist has never been massively popular – think of The Fall, The Smiths etc.

isn’t that true of pretty much every mega-successful band in the UK once they’ve been around for many years?
they’ll continue to be appreciated in europe, japan etc. long after they’ve been shunned by the UK press.

maybe punk-rock is such an enduring sacred cow as its ethos was to be destructive, fast-moving, short-lived and hence perfect for the short attention spans of the UK music press.
