DeeExpus at Maltby on Saturday night was excellent and they had the sound sorted out as far as the audience were concerned, although still quite a few hand signals to get the in-ear mix correct. I must say I'm really enjoying their take on prog - sort of half way between Marillion and PT but with added bounce and intelligent complexity. Throw in a 26 minute opener and you can understand why some in the audience might go "What??"

From speaking to others after the gig, I get the impression DeeExpus were having a bit of an off night. Poor sound (it was very echoey and boomy) meant some of the subtleties in the sound were getting lost in the mix. And if the number of hand signals between band members and the sound desk were anything to go by, the band were having problems hearing themselves on stage - that probably took the edge off their performance.

Something I've learned from seeing Breathing Space many times in small club venues - For this kind of music the guy doing the sound is as important as anyone on the actual stage.

It's strange, I've never been able to get into Tinyfish. When I saw them support Touchstone in 2010 I couldn't really find any tunes :(

DeeExpus on the other hand are top imo :D
