I guess people who can’t be bothered to seek out music for themselves get the music they deserve, but it also means that artists who aren’t willing to conform to a very limited template don’t get the audiences they deserve.

It seems that the bands who headline major festivals, or are near the top of the bill, such as Glastonbury or Reading get these prime slots at all of the major music events, including last years Olympics ceremonies. Especially if there’s any BBC TV coverage involved. Those bands already mentioned, Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs, Elbow, Coldplay etc.

For those people who are casual music fans (the majority), it’s probably unrealistic to expect them to seek out new music for themselves. Years of brainwashing is hard to reverse. The so-called music intelligentsia at the BBC and the major labels have a lot to answer for. I know this probably goes against the grain for the BBC music policy, but why not have a new music programme dedicated to those bands and hard working musicians who have genuine and rare talent, but they continue to work below the radar. Unsigned or on small labels only. They could even put it on BBC 2 or BBC 3 at midnight so that it doesn’t interfere with any “valuable” prime time viewing. Who knows, it might even be a success.

Does anyone knowingly accept second or third best? It takes something of a leap of faith to believe that something better (for you) is out there. Part of the success of the major labels is down to persuading people that they do not need to embark on that search.
