I was just thinking it was so close to Marillion’s Brave as to be untrue. I’m sure the low string synth sound rising in pitch is a deliberate nod to the View from the Bridge. I found this blog searching for the connection. The idea of using the video to link together a string of otherwise loose songs is less coherent in the video they made for brave, though the songs there hang together better. The blurb on the record sleeve said “Have Suede reinvented the album?” I think they’ve reinvented the wheel. That all said, I loved it nonetheless. It’s got the best Suede ‘touches’ without all the cliches.

Similarly the 80s goth flavour hadn’t occurred to me, but now you mention it, it’s all over the record.

I wonder if people throw flour aound at the gigs?

I’m really enjoying the rejuvenated Suede, the lead single sounded really goth to me, which is good in my book, my favourite track at the moment is “I Don’t Know How To Reach You”. I hadn’t spotted a Marillion similarity, but interesting points of reference in your review, good to read.

Beautiful piece of name-munging! The lead guitarist in Suede is actually Richard Oakes, the bassist is Mat Osman, and the Richard Osman you’ve created from those two is the TV presenter on Pointless. Oh, and he’s Mat Osman’s brother.
