One topic on conversation on the Mostly Autumn Forums is how well the band went down with Bryan Adams fans. While nobody is realistically expecting an overnight doubling of MA’s fanbase, it’s hoped that a few people were sufficiently impressed by what they heard to want to investigate further.
With the rain putting such a dampener on things, we can’t really expect to read a great many glowing reviews, but I did find this mostly positive one from from Lynsay Shepherd’s blog:
The next support act were a band called “Mostly Autumnâ€, a Celtic rock band. They were really good but apparently the lead singer forgot to finish getting dressed before she came on stage. She could sing and the band were good but they seemed to go on forever. It kept raining and everyone’s spirits were really row. Many people considered leaving, purely because they were so cold and wet.
I suspect the ‘seemed to go on forever’ is more to do with the rain than the quality of MA’s music.
I was at the Murrayfield gig with a couple of Bryan Adams fans – my brother and a pal of his. My brother (who had never heard of MA before) was really taken with them and demaded copies of their albums off me after they had left the stage. His pal hated every minute of the set, labeling it ‘boring’ and nagging me for making them go early because “I thought you said they were good!”
Takes all sorts I suppose.
Having never seen them live before, but having heard the three most recent albums, I was reasonably impressed, but feel that the venue and the weather were not really at their best for the music. Late at night in a cosy venue or somewhere in the open air (grassy field, not plastic-floor covered stadium) on a hot summer’s afternoon would both have been much better.
So I’m probably still not a ‘fan’ as such, but will probably go and see them live next time they’re in the vicinity of Edinburgh.
Heather really should have worn more clothes though, what was she thinking…!?
You’re not going to see any support band at their best in those sorts of conditions.
They’re got a few dates at the end of the year, York and Newcastle in early November, and half a dozen dates at the end of December. Nothing in Scotland, though.
Don’t get me wrong, I really did enjoy Mostly Autumn. Fantastic music and great singing- a good choice of support act. If I had been warm and dry, I’d have enjoyed them so much more (why oh why did it have to rain, eh?).
I would definetly like to hear more from Mostly Autumn (preferrably in an indoor venue
). Thinking of buying one of their cd’s!
The nearest they’re playing to Scotland is Newcastle on the 11th November.
As for albums, I’d recommend either “Passengers” and “Storms Over Still Water” as the best starting point. They played two songs off each at Murrayfield.
Have ordered Passengers
I’m enjoying Passengers! I think my favourite song at the moment has to be Somewhere In Between (they performed that one live right?).
Cheers for the tip about askimet- turns out mine was deactivated so it’s sorted now
PS Don’t worry- I don’ t think it was the link on the MA forum that caused the spam- seems there are quite a few places linked to me now.
They played “Something In Between” and “Caught in a Fold” from Passengers. Had they done the planned 75 minutes set (it got cut short because of the rain), they would also have done “Answer the Question”.
I wish they’d bring back “Simple Ways” to the setlist. I don’t think they’ve played that since Jonathan Blackmore (the drummer on Passengers) left the band, but now they have an extra backing singer that one would be stunning live.
