I just find the discussions I get on given subjects to be of far better quality in other venues. I've said before that talking about anything on Twitter is like taking turns shouting through a mailslot, and after a while it just becomes unbelievably uncomfortable to have a *conversation* of any kind. If you want to say anything nuanced or of substance, you have to break it over so many messages that it's not even worth it.

As I've said before, I find the secret of getting the most out of Twitter comes as much from recognising what it isn't as it does from understanding it's strengths. It's more about connecting and making relationships with people that it's a subject-specific discussion forum.

Saying that, it helps if you're a fast reader and can skim the timeline to home in on the signal and tune out the noise. If you find that more effort than it's worth, then Twitter probably isn't for you.

I think he nailed one of the other problems I have with Twitter. It's like being force-fed other peoples' parade of nitwittery, and it's even worse when some of the marchers are people you know and rather like, so why are they debasing themselves like this? (That and the format is terrible.)
