Talking of genre definitions …
Do not go near the forthcoming release incorrectly called “Now That’s What I Call Rock”.
Do not read the track listing, or your head will explode.
It is much worse than you think.
(and warning, it does contain Coldplay).

One rather sad comment I remember reading was the line “The bands that play at this club are too good to be commercially successful”. I interpret that as the classic rock sound of those bands being too unfashionable.

This was exactly the line I had when “alternative rock” first appeared. The term was rendered meaningless so quickly it became difficult to remember a time when it had any meaning at all.
