Concert Meme

Music meme from John Kovalic.

Copy this list. Leave in the bands you’ve seen perform live. Delete the ones you haven’t and add new ones that you have seen until you reach 25. An asterisk means the previous person had it on their list. Two asterisks means the last two people who did this before you had that band on their list.

My list is skewed towards acts I’ve seen live in the past few years, with a smattering of legends from festivals in the 1980s

  • Anathema
  • Blue Öyster Cult
  • Breathing Space
  • Bryan Adams (I only went to see the support act!)
  • Deep Purple (Once with Blackmore, twice with Morse)
  • Def Leppard
  • Dweezil Zappa
  • Hayseed Dixie
  • Iron Maiden
  • Jethro Tull
  • Journey
  • Karnataka
  • Marillion (4 times with Fish, 5 with Steve Hogarth)
  • Mostly Autumn (14 times!)
  • Odin Dragonfly
  • Opeth
  • Pink Floyd *
  • Polish October
  • Porcupine Tree
  • Queensÿche
  • Rammstein
  • Rory Gallagher
  • Styx
  • The Reasoning
  • Thin Lizzy (with Phil Lynott!)

Just one act in common with John’s. My list is marked by the complete absence of 80s new wave or current indie/alternative bands; genres that just leave me cold.

    Heh… I’d suck at this game. I’ve never seen any of them.

    If I count artists I specifically went to see, it takes less than one hand. (I say “specifically” because there are a few bands that I saw because they performed at a church function, or I went to “a Christian concert” and these two or three groups played there and I had no idea who they were. (I own one of the artist’s albums now, though.))

    I just don’t go to live concerts much.

    Of course, if I wait until after Saturday, I’ll have a day at the Walnut Valley (bluegrass) Festival under my belt, and that’ll inflate the count quite a bit. But I probably won’t be able to tell you who half of them were. :)

    Sign of how much live music has eaten my life in the past year :) I’ve even passed on gaming conventions this year because of too many weekends spent chasing bands to opposite ends of the country.

  3. Yeah, I’ve seen that meme popping up everywhere and I still have yet to see anyone with whom I have a concert in common.

    I think Trout Fishing in America was the last concert I/we went to. No, wait… the Wichita Symphony Orchestra.

    Other than that… um, does the open-air REO Speedwagon concert over by the river count? I opened the back door and listened to them through the screen. That was more of a concert that went to me, I guess. And I didn’t actually *see* them perform.

  4. Tim Hall says:

    I had one in common with John Kovalic, and two bands I’ve seen in Ken Hite’s list, Pink Floyd and The Kinks (Who were a big disappointment)

  5. Mike Hale says:

    Hi Tim

    A bit of overlap with yours, though leaning more to the hard rock/metal side of things!

    * Hayseed Dixie *
    * Iron Maiden *
    * Metallica
    * Machine Head
    * AC/DC
    * Ash
    * Smashing Pumpkins
    * Nine Inch Nails
    * Motorhead
    * Dinosaur Jr
    * Muse
    * Slayer
    * Foo Fighters
    * Iggy and the Stooges
    * The Subways
    * Kasabian
    * Biffy Clyro
    * Eagles of Death Metal
    * Queens of the Stone Age
    * Tenacious D
    * Spinal Tap
    * Green Day
    * Editors
    * Shychild
    * Beastie Boys

    Some of my list is cheating though as some were seen at Festivals rather than by themselves…

  7. Tim Hall says:

    Many of those were the same gigs :) The Reasoning, Mostly Autumn and Marillion for starters, just from this year. BTW, I’ve just ordered a ticket for Marillion’s Xmas show in November.

    When did you see Def Leppard and Bryan Adams?

    I’ve also seen Hawkwind, Magnum, Twisted Sister, UFO, and (I think, but memory is hazy) Out to Lunch from your list.
