Game Wish 12: Mood Maintenance

This week’s WISH from Turn of a Friendly Die.

Sometimes in my games, I try to set a mood, only to have a joke or out-of-character chatter/commentary ruin it by going off on a tangent or breaking everyone into laughter, occasionally including me. I have pretty much given up on trying to get my players to be serious all the time – after all, when I’m on the other side of the screen, I’m not always serious either. Plus the game is a social, fun event, and people should not feel forced to be serious or in character all the time. (I’ll save that for LARPers)

That said, how do you keep the mood? And once lost, how do you try to bring everyone back? Can you? Is it even possible?

And what do you do with that one player who is always the first one to crack a joke and break up the tension you’ve built to so carefully, no matter how many times you’ve asked/warned him/her not to do that?

A difficult one. I’ve GMed a game where the out-of-game chatter took up more time than the actual game, which was very frustrating, to say the least. The last time I played with that group we got the OOC chatter out of the way first, only trouble was that took up two entire days before we started gaming! Not ideal.

The games I’ve GMed have tended not to be highly mood-intensive anyway, perhaps that’s my problem. A lot of the gaming I play is weekend-long sessions with people I only meet two or three times a year, where the purpose is as much social as gaming. And many games are ffairly light-hearted, comedy-style games in the first place.

One thing I have considered, though, is a pun box. Like a swearbox, but for puns. I hate bad puns.

New Sub-Blogs

Using the wonderful new features of Moveable Type, I’ve set up the category archives to work as sub-blogs. Since there are a finite number of people that are interested in Trains, RPGs and Prog-Rock (anyone other than Scott?), you can now bookmark the following pages and get just the subjects you’re interested in!

For Trains, use this url – www.kalyr.co.uk/weblog/railways
For RPGs, use this url – www.kalyr.co.uk/weblog/games
For Prog Rock, use this url – www.kalyr.co.uk/weblog/music

There are other subjects as well, but those are the three main ones. Now you have three separate blogs for the price of one!

20 Favourite Albums, Part 4

The final installment of my top twenty list.

Rush – Moving Pictures

Rush have always been a favourite band of mine, from the early ‘Led Zeppelin Junior’ approach of their debut album, though the epic prog-rock of “2112″ and “Hemispheres” to the polished stadium-rock of the 80s. It’s difficult to pick a single best album, but Moving Pictures is one of my favourites, catching them at a point of transition, combining the best elements of their ‘prog’ and ‘stadium’ eras.

UFO – Strangers in the Night

From start to finish, this album is dominated by the guitar of Michael Schenker. Although he left the band immediately after this recording, he’s never been quite so good before or since – just listen to his fluid solos on “Out in the Street”, “Love to Love”, “Lights Out” and of course, “Rock Bottom”. If you’re a fan of lead guitar, this album is a must-have.

Uriah Heep – Salisbury

Uriah Heep’s second album, and the most varied and progressive album they recorded. Highlight is the 17-minute title track, a semi-orchestral piece recorded with brass and woodwind sections, a seriously overlooked rock classic.

Yes – Going for the One

While many people say Yes were never as good after “Tales from Topographic Oceans”, this 1977 album is still my favourite. It contains both “Awaken”, one of the best of their lengthy epics with some marvelously dotty lyrics from Jon Anderson, and the storming “Parallels”, one of their few real rockers, with that wonderful intro of Rick Wakeman’s pipe organ and Steve Howe’s rippling guitar.

Frank Zappa – The Best Band You’ve Never Heard in your Life

Frank Zappa has recorded seemingly hundreds of albums, including a great many live ones. This one, recorded on his final 1988 tour with an 11-piece band, includes most of the greatest hits from his 20-year career. It also contains a surreal cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway” with the brass section playing the guitar solo note-for-note.

Game Wish 11: Character Recognition

Have you ever seen or met someone — in person, on TV, in a movie, or whatever — who made you think “Oh my goodness, that’s my character!” Who was it (if you know), and what were the similarities?

In a word, no. I don’t know whether that means I don’t watch enough TV and movies, or my characters aren’t well enough defined.

However, there is one player (who shall be nameless) in my Dreamlyrics message board game for whom all her characters remind me of Dr. Who’s assistant, Leela. “Can I kill him now, doctor?”.

Now using Moveable Type

After a couple of days’ work configuring things, I’ve just about got the Moveable Type version of this weblog up and running. I’ve converted all the old archives, and created a workable template for the index page, at least. The category pages and the archives aren’t properly formatted yet, but they’re there.

Greece Bans Electronic Gaming

According to this news.com article, the Greek government has banned all electronic and computer gaming of any kind, ostensibly as part of a law to outlaw gambing machines.

Not only does this mean that tourists risk heavy fines and even imprisonment for playing something as innocuous as a gameboy, presumably this makes it illegal to play in any PBeMs or message games from Greece.

I don’t know the background to this law, or much about Greek politics, but it seems to me that any politicians who could pass a law like this without any kind of public consultation is either too stupid or too evil to be allowed to remain in public office. Was this law passed as a result of some hysterical moral panic led by the Greek equivalent of the Daily Mail?

It may be that this law will eventually be struck down by the European Court of Human rights.
