Cloud Atlas confirmed for 2014 Cambridge Rock Festival

The recently-formed York-based progressive rock band have announced on Twitter than they are confirmed for the 2014 Cambridge Rock Festival, joining blues-rock guitarist Larry Miller in the acts announced to date.

The 2012 festival marked the debut of Stolen Earth, Heidi Widdop’s previous band, and the year before was her first gig fronting Breathing Space, the final lineup of which morphed into Stolen Earth a few months later.

Cloud Atlas are currently in the studio working on their debut album, for which they are still taking pre-orders.

Is Lovecraft’s racism central to the horror?

I had an interesting if brief discussion on Twitter with feminist writer and activist Laurie Penny about H. P. Lovecraft. Despite his reactionary and misanthropic world-view, she’s a big fan and stated that his massive racism and sexism are an intrinsic part of the horror.

You don’t have to read much Lovecraft to recognise that his work is shot through with racism. It’s not just having a cat called “Nigger Boy”; stories like the iconic “Call of Cthulhu” are filled with awful racial stereotypes, and a primal fear of miscegenation lies at the heart of “The Shadow Over Innsmouth“.

Yet almost all Lovecraft fans I know are left-leaning in their politics and strongly anti-racist. This may just be a reflection of the sorts of people I hang out with online, but I can’t think of many HPL fans with robustly right-wing views. Certainly I’ve seen no evidence of hordes of Lovecraft fans who embrace his racism and sexism in the manner of a noisy faction of Robert Heinlein fanboys.

What are your feelings about Lovecraft? Do you or people you know find his racism too much to stomach? Are there hordes of ultra-reactionary Deep Ones that embrace his values who I’m blissfully unaware of?

The Hottest Chicks in Hard Rock? No Thanks!

Hottest Chicks in Rock Oh Dear.

I’m all in favour of rock and metal not being a boy’s club, and know Spinal Tap popularised the phrase “What’s wrong with being sexy”, but now way is The Hottest Chicks in Hard Rock Tour  even remotely a good idea.

Marketing music solely on the sex appeal of the singers is the way boy bands like One Direction are promoted. Surely rock and metal ought to be about the music first and foremost, and not about how “hot” the lead singer is?

There is more than enough great guitar-shredding hard rock in the world that isn’t made by racist, sexist assholes. Therefore there is absolutely no reason why anyone ever needs to listen to the music of Ted Nugent.

UKIP’s David Silvester – Bronze Age Bigotry

UKIP (and former Tory) councillor David Silvester is blaming the recent floods on Gay Marriage.

“The scriptures make it abundantly clear that a Christian nation that abandons its faith and acts contrary to the Gospel (and in naked breach of a coronation oath) will be beset by natural disasters such as storms, disease, pestilence and war,” he said.

“I wrote to David Cameron in April 2012 to warn him that disasters would accompany the passage of his same-sex marriage Bill.

“But he went ahead despite a 600,000-signature petition by concerned Christians and more than half of his own parliamentary party saying that he should not do so.

It makes it a hell of a lot harder to be a Christian in Britain when you have to share a faith with idiots like him. This is the sort of nonsense you expect from the Talibanesque backwoods of the American bible belt, but I’d like to think that we Britons had moved beyond this sort of nonsense.

My faith tells me that solidarity with LGBT friends, some of whom are Christians themselves trumps the “feelings” of stupid bigots like David Silvester. I am a mere layman, not given the power of Excommunication, but for me, David Silvester and others like hims are not Christians and should not be described as such. He’s still living the Bronze Age for starters.

If he ever read his Bible he would know there are many more passages telling us how to treat the poor than there are about sexuality.

It is telling that UKIP have refused to condemn his statement, instead issuing a weasel-worded statement drawing a bogus distinction between personal religious beliefs and political policies. Which is of course, complete bullshit, but that’s UKIP for you.

If you’re still tempted to vote for this bunch of swivel-eyed loons at the next election, remind yourself that David Sylvester represents their core values.

Update: After the national media ran with this, UKIP have done an abrupt U-turn and suspended David Silvester from the party.

An earlier version of this post spelled Mr Silvester’s name wrong. Now corrected.

National Rail Enquiries Fail

Arriva Trains 158 at Porthmadog

So, despite the fact the festival was way out in the sticks, I booked up for HRH Prog 2 at Hafon Y Mor near Pwllheli in March. It’s a six-hour train journey, but being a rail enthusiast I always treat the journey as part of the holiday when going away.

Then disaster stuck. First, construction work on Pont Brewit near Penrhyndeudraeth‎ damaged the bridge, with initial suggestions that the line would be closed for at least a year until the new bridge was complete, and rail replacement buses from Harlech.

Then the storms at the beginning of January damaged the line in multiple places, and from the extent of the damage to the sea wall it’s quite possible it will take several months to repair. Replacement buses are now in place from Machynlleth.

Unfortunately it’s impossible to find the timimgs of these replacement buses online. The National Rail Enquiries website shows trains running through to Penychain (the neareast stop to Hafan-y-Mor) with no mention of bus replacements by March. Ask it about the same journey for next week, and you get train to Harlech and bus from there (total journey time from Reading just over seven hours). Given that parts of the line will certainly be closed for at least a week, it’s difficult to escape the conclusion that National Rail Enquiries is lying to me.

Alternative travel plans are not looking good either. The even organisers have arranged a shuttle bus to Bangor on Thursday and Sunday, but unfortunately weekend engineering work with multiple rail replacement buses turns any attempt to travel home via that route on Sunday into a nightmare. I’d advise the organisers of HRH Prog to schedule next year’s festival for Saturday and Sunday rather than Friday and Saturday to avoid a repetition.

And travelling the whole way by coach is a complete non-starter; National Express quotes an eleven-hour journey, and no gig is worth enduring eleven hours on board a coach.

At the moment the only advice I’m getting is “check your journey details closer to the time”, which isn’t really satisfactory.

Daily Mail Prog

A recent Guardian Music Blog post asked for examples of really bad lyrics about current affairs. I nominated Pendragon’s Green and Pleasant Land, and it predictably made some other Guardian commenters’ heads explode.

I knew the song was controversial, but until I googled for the lyrics I didn’t realise quite how vile they were, with their references to Sharia Law and far-right urban myths about not being allowed to mention Christmas. The whole thing reads like a parody Daily Mail bingo card set to music. Except it’s not supposed to be a parody.

I remember when I saw Pendragon live a couple of years back, a poor gig ruined by terrible sound. Nick Barratt was complaining about the reactions to the song, and seemed to take offence at being called a bigot. Nick, if you don’t like being called a bigot, you could always stop behaving like one.

I guess it’s easier to be critical of a band’s lyrics when you’re not a big fan of their music. I always thought Pendragon were one of the least interesting of the 80s crop of neo-prog bands. Like contemporaries Marillion and IQ they started out wearing some obvious influences on their sleeves. But unlike those bands, who merely used those influences as a starting point to develop their own musical identities, Pendragon seemed content to continue sounding like a derivative pastiche of their 70s heroes; indeed some of their songs contain whole sections lifted from Pink Floyd and Yes.

Anyway, here’s a link to the song itself, so you can make up your own mind about it.

Pendragon have been around a long time, and have gathered themselves a loyal fanbase. But for me there are more than enough great bands in the progressive rock scene nowadays to feel any need to bother with bands that write such “problematic” lyrics.

Vintage Traction at Spiez

SBB Em3/3 and Ae6/6 at Spiez

Some photos from a visit to Switzerland back in 2003. It was a time when I was working on an N-gauge layout based on the Bern Lötchberg Simplon line, and took a lot of photos detailing train formations, rolling stock and structures as research.

I used the town of Spiez as a base. It’s both a major rail hub with lines leading off in four directions, and a lakeside resort that’s quieter than tourist traps like Interlaken.

A few of these were on my long-dead Fotopic site, but never got migrated over to my replacement site. This was my last year of using film before I went digital; these are taken from CD-Roms scanned at the same time as the films were processed.

Veteran SBB Ae6/6 on a local freight at Speiz

Here we have a veteran SBB Ae6/6 arriving at Speiz on a local freight made up largely of cement tankers, which I think originated from the Interlaken branch. These locos, dating from 1952, were once the principle power on the trans-Alpine main lines, especially the Gotthard line. By 2003 these fifty year old machines had been relegated to much humbler duties such as this one.

BLS Ae4/4 no 258 arrives at Speiz with a train from the Simmental line.

This BLS Ae4/4, seen here coming off the Simmental line with a train from Zweisimmen, is even older, dating from 1941. These locomotives are hugely significant historically, as the first modern-style bogie locomotives; prior to their introduction all electric locomotives were rigid-framed or articulated designs.

SBB Em3/3 arrives at Speiz with a trip freight.

An SBB Em3/3 arrives with a short local freight, which I believe came off the Simmental line. With the entire network electrified and small shunting tractors available at many stations, diesel locomotives aren’t particularly common in Switzerland. They’re largely restricted to short-distance trip workings such as this one.

Ae6/6 at Spiez with

The sun doesn’t always shine in Switzerland, and here’s another venerable Ae6/6 on the cement run. This is one of the so-called “Kantonsloks”, fitted with chrome trim and names after the Swiss cantons.
