#BaenAwardsStories

Baen Logo Everyone loves a Twitter hashtag game. But this one does need a little context in order to make sense.

Science Fiction publisher Baen Books, who specialise in military and action-adventure SF with a decidedly conservtive-libertarian bent, have announced a Fantasy Short Story Award. The way it’s come so soon after the highly controversial Hugo Awards right-wing block-voting slate that included a number of Baen authors has raised eyebrows, and there have been suggestions that it’s not entirely a coincidence.

Worse, it’s being judged by none other than Larry Correia, who put together that slate and promoted it along with the virulent racist, homophobe and rape apologist Vox Day, whose work also appeared on that slate. Correia may be a fine writer, but from his blog he comes over as an unpleasant egotistic bellend. And he doesn’t seem the least bit bothered that association with Vox Day might damage his career. It makes you wonder just how radioactive someone needs to be before people refuse to associate with them.

The rules of the contest make it clear what sort of stories they’re looking for.

What We Want To See

Adventure fantasy with heroes you want to root for. Warriors either modern or medieval, who solve problems with their wits or with their sword–and we have nothing against dragons, elves, dwarves, castles under siege, urban fantasy, damsels in distress, or damsels who can’t be bothered to be distressed.

What We Don’t Want To See

Political drama with no action, angst-ridden teens pining over vampire lovers, religious allegory, novel segments, your gaming adventure transcript, anything set in any universe not your own, “it was all a dream” endings, or screenplays.

Yes, it does seem to emphasis a certain somewhat clichéd type of story, with rather a lot of implied sexism.

The satirists of Twitter were very quick off the mark with a hashtag game that mercilessly mocked all of Baen Books’ tropes. Here are a few of the highlights.

Spot the parody of Vox Day.

And while on the subject of Vox Day, Stephanie Zvan has reviewed his Hugo Award nominated Opera Vita Aeterna, and concludes the story is indeed truly, truly awful, Eye of Argon without the unintentional humour. It’s impossible to escape the conclusion that it was nominated for the sole purpose of trolling the awards.

Cambridge Rock Festival 2014 News

Cambridge Rock Festival 2014 poster

Bands announced so far for the main stage on the Cambridge Rock Festival 2014. Not yet on the poster is one major addition:

CRF is pleased to announce Leon Hendrix & his band are attending CRF14 on Saturday 9th August.

Leon and his band will play many of Jimi Hendrix’s classics, plus some of his own material.

A new intimate meet and greet area is being set up specially for this as Leon wants to meet and chat to as many CRFers as possible during the day and then perform with his band on mainstage. This will present all of us with an amazing opportunity to get a unique insight into ‘the man’ and the brothers relationship.

While the bill is more varied than last year, there’s still a strong blues-rock emphasis on Friday and Saturday, though there is a very impressive lineup of progressive rock on Sunday.

Forwardman – Twenty-Six

“Alternative rock” is a bit of an unfortunate descriptive term that conjures images of all manner of potential horrors and evil, but this song from Helsinki’s Sakari Viittala is worth a listen. It’s released in May 16th, and an album will follow in the autumn.

Sarah Palin, Pagan

Sarah Palin

It looks as though at least some of America’s Christians have finally had enough of Sarah Palin, who came out with this “joke” at the NRA convention.

“They obviously have information on plots to carry out jihad,” Palin said of terrorists. “Oh, but you can’t offend them, can’t make them feel uncomfortable, not even a smidgen. Well, if I were in charge, they would know that waterboarding is how we baptize terrorists.”

The irony that an increasing number of Americans and non-Americans now consider the NRA themselves to a terrorist organisation is not lost here.

The word “blasphemy” is being used, and for once the word is appropriate. Even conservative Christian groups are now distancing themselves from these remarks.

The strongly social justice orientated “Faithful America” had this to say.

This is what we’ve come to in America: A former candidate for vice-president can equate torture and Holy Baptism, and one of the nation’s most powerful political lobbies erupts into cheers and applause. As usual, Palin’s remarks are already making international headlines, once again portraying Christianity as a religion of hatred and violence.

And this from Joe Carter of The Gospel Coalition:

Gov. Palin was attempting to appeal to the basest political populism nothing in her remarks could be construed as genuinely conservative by claiming that current U.S. counterterrorism policy is overly-tolerant and empathetic toward our enemies. Unfortunately, what Palin is proposing is a mixture of pagan ethics and civil deistic religion.

That last line says it all.

Palin, and many others on the Religious Right, are not and have never been Christian in any meaninful sense of the word. They practice what is at best a folk-religion which uses Christian symbolism in the most superficial of manners. At worst, it’s a much darker and more dangerous faith which has appropriated Christian symbols. Palin belongs to a sect that I’ve previously described as resembling a cross between the Manichean Heresy and Haitian Voudoun.

Bloom.fm bites the dust?

Bloom Gameover

Sad news on Bloom.fm’s blog

We’ll keep this short because we’re pretty shell-shocked.

It’s game over for Bloom.fm.

Our investor, who’s been along for the ride since day one, has unexpectedly pulled our funding.

It’s come so out of the blue that we don’t have time to find new investment. So, with enormous regret, we have to shut up shop.

This is a poetically crappy turn of events as our young business was showing real promise. Our apps and web player are looking super-nice and we had 1,158,914 registered users in a little over a year. Yep.

A massive thanks to everyone that helped us get this far. We’re absolutely gutted. But it’s been a real pleasure.

A later blog post states that the application will remain running for a few days while they make last ditch attempts to find a buyer.

Coming so soon after the demise of last.fm’s streaming radio, it does make you question the viability of legal online streaming services. Are the labels and collection agencies being too greedy when it comes to licencing? Or do they want startups like Bloom to fail so as not to cannibalise download sales?

Update: In an interview today, Bloom’s Oleg Formenko suggests that all may not be lost, and there are a number of potential buyers in the frame,

The prog nostalgia shows have been drawing sizable crowds. The likes of Rick Wakeman reviving Journey to the Centre of the Earth, Steve Hackett’s Genesis Revisited tour, and Yes playing three classic 70s albums in full can fill venues as large as The Royal Albert Hall. But just imagine if everyone who went to one of those gigs also bought a ticket for one of the current prog bands.
