Comments

A question for readers of this blog, whether you’re one of the few that regularly comments or not. What would encourage you to leave more comemnts? Or, indeed, any comments?

Infuriating clickbait and comments from other people who are Wrong on the Internet.

    lol :)

“Win an argument on the internet with this one simple trick!”

I usually only comment on things if I’ve got something to say. In my experience, the most pleasurable commenting sessions are usually when there is a community of people talking together in an interesting and spam- and harassment-free way. The Angry Metal Guy blog springs to mind. As do a couple of technical forums I frequent. I guess what I’m saying is this might not be something you can create. You can curate it, but you need the people to create the community.

Some good points there. I think there’s ample evidence that there’s a quality vs quantity thing here, and building a community is not served by posting provocative clickbait.

Yes, I think maybe you just need more good commenters to start and maintain more comment threads? Makes me miss usenet now that there are forums and blogs all over the place instead of one main discussion area.

  7. Tim Hall says:

I think many of the conversations that would have taken place on Usenet now take place on social networks like Twitter, Facebook and Reddit.

I recognise I’m swimming against the tide trying to keep this blog going, but this blog has been around for a long time, and I want a space that’s not controlled by some big anonymous corporation I don’t really trust.
